Portobello Window Wanderland 2022

Portobello High Street and surrounding area

Thursday 8th ‑ Sunday 11th Dec 2022 from 5.30pm to 8.30pm

We are excited to once again be taking part in the Window Wanderland. We are inviting our local community to join us in bringing some magic to our streets this December.

It is free to take part, and everyone is welcome. All you have to do is register your window for our event. This will allow it to be included on our interactive map of devices highlighting all the different window locations.

How does it work?

You need to design a window and display it between Thursday 8th Dec and Sunday 11th Dec from 5.30pm to 8.30pm by leaving your curtains open and your light on.

You can make a display in one or more windows of your flat, house, business, or shop! Think about how the window will look when lit from inside – you could create an image using silhouettes, tissue paper, or objects.

This year our theme, will be a ‘Community Life’ display. This could mean something that to you reflects the spirit of the community in Portobello.  It could be environmental improvements (litter/ beach cleaning, electric cars / bikes etc), leisure activities (wild swimming/ rowing, etc), a local charity, markets, community events– pretty much anything that represents the community to you. Last year the windows were so varied, inspired, amazing that we don’t want to set any limits.  Your only boundary is your imagination!  That said, please consider your safety and do not use candles or naked flames in your displays.

This will go hand in hand with other festive events taking place at the same time (e.g., The Porty Christmas Tree lights, late night shopping on the High Street, snowflake light projection).

We strongly encourage people not to buy new, but instead to use what you have creatively. Empty plastic bottles, or cartons, cereal boxes, colourful tissue paper etc. can all be repurposed. We’ll aim to share some ideas and examples over the next few weeks and encourage you to do likewise.

Donations

Our intention is to raise some funds to repay the Window Wanderland toolkit fee and possibly for future winter celebrations but please note, this is free to take part in and is NOT principally a fund-raising exercise – it is a feel-good creative community exercise. Any funds gathered over the £150 will be used for future winter festival activities. On that understanding, if you wish to contribute, please donate to the Action Porty PayPal account friendsofbellfield@gmail.com or to the Action Porty bank account sort code 87 70 11, account number 81368060 with a reference Window Wanderland.

Window Wanderlands are a great way to connect people, encouraging local outdoor walks to look at the window displays.

The organisers and participants of ‘Portobello Window Wanderland’ cannot accept liability for any loss, damage or injury sustained by any member of the public visiting any of the Window Wanderland displays. Visitors should be alert to the variety of every-day hazards and visit at their own risk. Please supervise children carefully.

What to do next:

·       Register your window now, and you will get a confirmation email (remember to keep an eye on your junk mail!).

·       Tell your friends and neighbours and ask them to get involved!
