Portobello Window Wanderland 2024
Portobello High St and Surrounding Area
Took place on 1‑4 Mar 2024
This event has already taken place.
As the nights grow lighter, we*, are inviting our local community to join us and say ‘Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring!’ We would like to connect people across our community and encourage local outdoor walks to look at the window displays.
It’s FREE to take part and everyone is welcome to participate by making a window display OR taking a walk to view the windows, OR both.
Fancy taking part?
Design a window and display it between Friday 1st March and Monday 4th March from 6pm to 9pm by leaving your curtains open and your light on.
Register your window for to be included on our interactive online map showing all the different window locations.
You can make a display in one or more windows of your flat, house, business, shop, school, nursery, car, campervan,– or your front garden!
Our theme this year, if you’d like to follow it, will be ‘Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring’. This could mean something to you which reflects the change of seasons in Portobello or it could be more conceptual relating to light, new life, hope etc. The theme is only a guide, there’s no need to follow it! In previous years the windows have been so varied, inspired, amazing that we don’t want to set any limits. Your only boundary is your imagination and anything goes… as long as it’s family-friendly! That said, please consider your safety and do not use candles or naked flames in your displays.
Think about how the window will look when lit from inside – you could create an image using silhouettes, tissue paper, or objects. It could be a three-dimensional display, for example using Lego™. Remember that with the lighter evenings coming, the window will also be viewed in daylight too.
We strongly encourage people not to buy new, but instead to use what you have creatively. Empty plastic bottles, or cartons, cereal boxes, colourful tissue paper etc. can all be repurposed. We’ll aim to share some ideas and examples over the next few weeks and encourage you to do likewise.
